The Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at Medical University Vienna (MUW), is one of Europe’s largest and most comprehensive academic musculoskeletal treatment and research units, embedded in Vienna General Hospital (AKH Wien), a leading tertiary referral center. The department provides full-spectrum care across orthopedics and trauma surgery, including degenerative and overuse disorders, sports injuries, tendon pathologies, complex trauma, and reconstructive procedures, with a high annual patient volume and continuous emergency and elective services. Clinically, the department has extensive experience in the management of tendon disorders, biologic and regenerative treatment strategies, and translational´ research, supported by specialized outpatient clinics, advanced imaging, surgical infrastructure, and state of the art follow-up pathways. This clinical capacity enables the safe and efficient conduct of interventional clinical studies.

Academically, the department combines patient care with strong integration into MUW´s research and teaching mission, contributing to international collaborations, EU-funded projects, and structured clinical training programs. Its size, interdisciplinary expertise, and established governance structures qualify the department to assume the role of project coordinator and primary clinical site for EU-funded clinical research in musculoskeletal and regenerative medicine.
